Draperies are stuff that needs to be created carefully with patience and dedication. But often we neither have the time nor the budget for this. The trick lies in understanding, how to get the ready-made drapes get a customized look and feel.

To start with, you must take accurate measurements for your window treatments to be right. Most companies that sell ready-made window treatments help with taking measurements. This is the most critical step to start with. There are numerous issues in these blogs that can make a world of difference in creating a finished look for windows. Read on to know more about these crucial factors.

  • First of all you need to measure your window. Let’s say if it is 100” wide, do we then need drapes of same width? The right way is to measure the window and then multiply it by 1, ½ or 2 times the width of the window, in order to determine how much fabric is actually necessary. Getting custom drapes does not just mean covering the window. In fact there is nothing worse than ill-fitting drapery that fails to cover the complete window. It is best to buy double width panels by sewing the two panels together in order to get the fullness you need.
  • Make sure that you have enough space on the walls on either side of the windows. This is called stack back. It makes your windows appear larger, creating an illusion of spaciousness and allows for more light in the room. The idea is best suited for bedroom or breakfast room. Once again do not skimp and take generous measurements.
  • Ensure that the rods that you have are enough to hold the weight of your drapery. Nothing is worse than a rod that weighs down at the middle. In case you need extra brackets to reinforce your rods, do not hesitate.
  • Nothing in the world is worse than high water drapery that floats your wall through mid-way. Take into consideration where exactly you want the panels to hang. Decide if you require wall-mounted or trim-mounted, whether you want them 4” or 6”, along with what type of rod and ring that you are planning to use. Do the entire math, followed by adding an extra 4” to the overall finished length. You might think you are in need of 90” panel, whereas your actual need might be 108”.
  • Also the most fashionable way of doing your drapes is wall-mounting. This makes the windows look a lot taller. Especially for homes with 8” or 9” ceilings, this is a great option. Look at the windows to decide how high you wish to go and then add the inches to it.
  • Another trick can be to add a fringe, trim, braid or band at the end of the ready-made fabric. This will instantly give it a custom look and feel.

All in all, a room will only look its best, if there are beautiful draperies adorning it. If you can afford custom drapery, it is best. However if your budget does not allow you to do that and you are looking at ready-made drapery, you can always consider the above points to make your room look glamorous and add a personalized touch.
