A kitchen window is generally one that most homeowners forget about when it comes to window treatments. But, often a small change in your kitchen window dressing can bring about a significant transformation in the entire appearance of the kitchen area.

There are several DIY options to change your kitchen window appearance. However, DIY ideas can be fun only when done right. The window shape, its size and your budget will determine how creative you can get with your DIY project.

Here are three simple window treatment ideas that you can do yourself to bring about an interesting transformation in your kitchen.

  • Tablecloth Valances

Do you have a tablecloth that you don’t use anymore or you have one from your grandmother’s collection that’s just taking up space in your cabinet? You can turn them into interesting valances for your kitchen windows. Old vintage tablecloths will look excellent but if you don’t own any, visit a farm auction or a curio shop to buy one. Hanging tablecloths as valances is also an option. If you like a no-sew look, then loop the ends through the curtain rod or bracket of your kitchen window. If you wish to sew it, then fold the square tablecloth like a headscarf to create a triangle shape and sew a casing to pass it through the rod.

  • Tea Towel Curtains

Cafe curtains are a popular style of curtains as they bring a great balance of privacy and light. If you have some unused tea towels, you can easily turn them into attractive cafe curtains! Fold the tea towels and adjust their heights so that the bottoms of the towels skim the windowsill. Once you decide the height, sew the folds at the top to create a casing for inserting the curtain rod. To give the tea towel cafe curtains a more edgy look, you can attach some attractive buttons across the seam.

  • Painted Vinyl Shades

Customize your existing vinyl shades with different hues of paint. Colourful painted stripes on your kitchen window can make it the focal point of your space. Carefully unroll your vinyl shade and apply a coat of primer sealer that’s meant for smooth or glossy surfaces. After the primer dries, paint the shade with a colour of your choice that complements the kitchen walls, cabinetry and furniture.

You can also get creative with the paint. If your existing shades are white, for example, first apply a coat of shellac-based primer sealer and allow it to dry. Next, tape off a pair of stripes in a width of your choice or at least 2 inches wide on each side. Now take two different contrasting shades of latex paint, like sunshine yellow and gray, to paint the different sections and give them a patterned look. Remove the tape to reveal the white vertical stripes.

Now that you have these simple ideas, try them and create your own hand-crafted kitchen window treatment. Just make sure to choose the window covering materials according to the style of your kitchen.
