Drapery
A well-hung window treatment can completely transform your room. Hanging the drapes correctly and selecting the right drapery hardware is the key to achieving the perfect window treatment.

Have you ever wondered how experts and designers create perfectly-dressed windows? The reason is that they understand what kind of hardware is needed to make the window more functional.

If you want to enhance your window treatment like an expert, then you need to learn the drapery hardware jargon and how they are used.

Let’s take a quick tour.

  • ● Decorative Rod

To start with, the most important hardware is a drapery rod. A drapery rod is used to support the drapery and is attached to the walls. If it comes in brass, verdigris, wrought iron, brushed nickel, pewter or wood finish, then it’s called a decorative rod. It can be fixed or adjustable in length.

  • ● Traverse Rod

Traverse rods are used with draperies that are opened and closed with a cord or wand. They are available in two varieties, two-way and one-way. Two-way rods move the drapes from the middle to each end and a one-way rod moves the drapes in one particular direction.

  • ● Café Rod

Café rods are mounted at eye level and have a narrow diameter. They are available in a wide range of colours and are used to hold lightweight curtains.  These types of rods are ideal for kitchen windows or windows with shorter curtains.

  • ● Finials

Finials are attached to the ends of drapery rod and give a finished look. They are used as decorative pieces and are available in a variety of styles. You can experiment with finials arrangement and create a different style for your windows.

  • ● Holdbacks

As the name suggests, holdbacks are used to hold back the drapery panels to the window sides. They are amazing decorative pieces and can be matched with the finish of your drapery rod for a complete look.

  • ● Elbow Brackets

When a wall has different angles and the drapery rod must be in the same direction with the angles, then elbow brackets come to rescue. Elbow brackets are placed at each corner to keep the drapery rods in flow with the wall. For a greater level of customization, you can purchase adjustable brackets to match the angles.

  • ● Center Support

If your windows cover a lengthy span, then center support is necessary to hold the rods. In the absence of a center support, the gravity will pull the draperies towards the floor making the drapery rod bend in the center. Generally, center supports are placed at every 30 to 36 inches.

  • ● End Cap

You won’t get a free end every time to add a finial to the rod. Sometimes your drapery rod will run into a wall leaving you with a few options for decoration. End caps are used to finish the look when one or both ends of your window merge with a wall.

Drapery hardware and accessories can add multiple layers and give dimension to your window treatment. Understanding of these elements is important if you want to treat your windows like a pro. Each window needs a different assortment and knowledge of various drapery accessories can ease your task.
