A pretty room with all the wrong curtains is somewhat like a really pretty lady, wearing a wrong make-up. It denigrates everything, looks jarring as well as makes people feel really uncomfortable. To combat this issue, let’s first try to find the stuff that usually goes wrong.

Mistakes-You-Might-Be-Making-with-Custom-Draperies

The most common mistake is hanging the rod low. You should ideally hang it slightly above the window frame, mostly because the curtain you chose was of the wrong length. Then as a matter of perspective you wanted to avoid the too-short look of the curtains, hence hung it a little lower.

Now the curtains do not always have to be 20-inch above the window, literally, just under the ceiling. But what you really need is a 1/2 to 2/3 inch gap from the ceiling. This will make your ceiling look really high. This is not only the better way to hang the curtain; it is also the ‘cultural height’ of where the curtain rod must actually be. This is the height where we are used to seeing our curtains. In case anyone gets too close to the window sill, and you have a lot of space to play with, this will only make the curtains stand out in your room. High positioning of the rod will lift the vision of the eye, making the ceiling look higher and the room look bigger.

Meanwhile, let’s look at the common alternatives to the “too short” curtains. The three great options to avoid this look will be:-

1)The slight float: This sits about an inch higher than the floor. If you need to hang these curtains, without any break at all, so that they hang completely straight, then the float is the best option for you. It only barely touches the floor.
2)The kiss: The kiss barely touches the floor. Nevertheless, it is the hardest one to pull off, as it needs to be measured most accurately, from the rod. It’s one of the most commonly used ones, as it looks very unintentional and customized, while also being the hardest to accomplish. A tiny bend occurs in the curtains when its open, making it look all the more attractive.
3)The puddle: Where this happens, the curtain just puddles at the base on the floor. For all the fashion freaks out there, this will be the best window curtain. People who are looking to an old world, feminine and more European feel can definitely opt for these curtains. Those who are planning to install a really high quality fabric, linen or velvet can really benefit from this method. For an exquisite voluminous puddle one must ensure that the material is thick and grand.

Another most common mistake is hanging the rod not so wide enough, so as to cover the entire window frame. Curtains are then forced to be hanging partially from the window. This blocks light making the window look smaller. A 6-to-10-inch extended rod on both sides will make the rod look best.

However ensure that the height above the window sill is equal to the space on either side. Widen and lift the rod, so that the window frame looks bigger to the eye and much more light is let inside the room.

Remember, privacy is a must, but there is nothing better than natural light. So let it shine on.
