Do you want to dress up your windows for the holidays but not sure how?

Regardless of your current decor, there is no denying the joy that comes with decorating one’s home during the holiday season. And we could all use some extra joy this year.

One simple way to do this is by decorating our windows.

Despite presenting the perfect opportunity for a festive display, window treatments are often overlooked areas during holiday decorating. They are a perfectly framed canvas that can be adorned in a multitude of ways without spending too much.

Whether you have roller blinds, custom blinds, or another variety, these decorating ideas are a great way to make your home feel more festive.

Fun Ways to Decorate Your Windows This Holiday Season

Here are some window decorating ideas to provide some inspiration and make your house look and feel more festive.

1. Decorate with Garlands

There are few things that add an instant festive atmosphere as effectively and quickly as garlands.

This traditional decoration can be used on different types of windows, making them a versatile option. You can drape them around the window frame, hang a strand from it, or simply place it on the window sill.

If you have high ceilings, hanging them around your windows will draw the eyes upwards towards the ceiling and make the space look more grand and elegant. Just make sure you choose garlands that meet your holiday decor vision, including your other decorations.

2. Invest in Festive Window Coverings

Your window treatments add to your home’s holiday cheer. So, it isn’t necessary to have the same ones hanging during the holidays as you have the rest of the year.

If you have curtains or draperies, consider taking them down and adding unique holiday-themed ones in a festive pattern, texture, or colour instead. Depending on the room’s colour scheme, you can choose gold and deep red as they will look great throughout Christmas and New Year.

Alternatively, you can go for green and red plaid, patterns with rich brocade, or white window treatments with gold accents.

If festive fabrics are too much, add sheer curtains with holidays lights behind them to create a magical glow that filters into the room through the thin fabric. For this, wrap strands of twinkling lights around the curtain rod, allowing the lights to hang freely behind the curtains. It’s a great way to show off your sense of style during the holidays while adding a warm glow.

3. Hang Wreaths

The first place anyone looking to add holiday decorations thinks about when hanging wreaths are doors. However, there are smaller variations available that can help add festive cheer to other parts of your home.

Another great place to hang them in is your windows. You can either use a suction cup or decorative ribbons to attach them to the window glass or suspend them from the window frame. They can be used with different types of window treatments, such as curtains and roller blinds, and can easily be placed on top of shades to become a focal point.

When attached flush against the window glass inside, they will be visible from the outside, even when you keep the window treatment drawn closed. Make sure you choose ones that have accent colours to match the room’s other decor elements for a cohesive appearance.

4. Add Lights

Incorporating lights into your holiday decor is a great way to spruce up your windows for the season.

If you have uniquely-shaped windows, use a string of lights to create a design that fits the season’s theme. While a relatively simple way to decorate, it can add colour and a sense of excitement to the space without requiring too much effort.

5. Hang Ornaments

Similar to the idea of hanging garlands and lights, you can use your old ornaments and create a beautiful window display.

Gather any used or unused ornaments and attach them to a length of twine or string, but make sure to arrange them nicely before hanging them in front of the window glass. It’s a subtle yet effective way to bring in holiday cheer. Additionally, you can match the colour of the ornaments with your window treatments to make the decor pop.

For extra panache, combine them with other decorative elements such as ribbons, pine boughs, and lights.

It’s a great time to update your windows and add a fresh look in time for the holiday season. And it doesn’t have to be a time-consuming or difficult task. You can use your creativity and imagination and the ideas mentioned here to add some extra festive cheer.
